Job Title: Sign Language Interpreter

 

Wage/Hour Status:  Nonexempt

 

Pay Group:  Negotiable

 

Primary Purpose: Provide voice to sign and sign to voice interpretive services in an educational setting utilizing appropriate forms of sign languages. Performs duties in support of assisting students in educational achievement.

 

Qualifications

 

Education/Certification/Experience:

 

High school diploma from an accredited high school or hold GED.

 

Certification from the Texas Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) or the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) required.

 

This position requires personal technology that will enable the completion of job duties and responsibilities when working remotely.

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

 

Communicate in a professional manner.

 

General knowledge of language development preferred.

 

Knowledge of deaf culture and ability to interact with deaf community preferred.

  

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

1.Interpret instructor's lectures, comments, and questions for deaf/hard-of-hearing students in a mainstream classroom setting.

 

2. Interpret students' questions and statements.

 

3. Interpret for school functions as assigned.

 

4. Adapt signing level and system to the communication needs of the students.

 

5. Follow the code of ethics for certified interpreters.

 

6. Participate cooperatively as a member of the educational team.

 

7. Follow schedule as determined by the principal of assignment.

 

8. Willing to improve signing skills through in-service, workshops and/or additional classes.

 

9. Perform other duties as assigned.

10. Maintain confidentiality in handling sensitive information received in the performance of the job duties.

 

11. Perform duties in a professional manner through daily, punctual attendance at location of work assignment.

 

12. Follow Windham School District policies and procedures in completing assigned job duties.

 

13. Execute duties in a professional, ethical and responsible manner as defined in 19 TAC Chapter 247, Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators.

Environmental Demands:

 

Work inside and outside, noise, radiant/electrical energy, work alone, work with others, around machines with moving parts and objects, possible exposure to microwaves in use, exposure to hot and cold temperatures, exposure to dust and cleaning chemicals.
